What is the Peak Performance Golf Swing?

If you are a Don Trahan, The Swing Surgeon, student or are interested in a swing style that will allow you to play this game well into your 80’s without pain, you will be interested in this page. An additional  benefit to no pain, is that you will be striking the ball more consistently and accurately in a fairly short time.

The Peak Performance Golf Swing was developed by Don Trahan, The Swing Surgeon, to take advantage of the natural movements of the body to execute a consistent golf swing. It is based on science: the physics of the ball and club, and the physiology of the body. A proper setup puts your body into a natural position to execute a golf swing. You cannot make your body move in a way that is contrary to nature, and when you try, that is how you injure yourself and create truly ugly golf shots.

The swing is described as a “limited turn, ¾ backswing, vertical swing,” which follows the laws of physics and physiology.

I am a PPGS instructor, trained and certified by Don Trahan personally to teach this swing. All instruction is by appointment and is conducted in my indoor projection studio. Initial lessons for someone new to the swing are a minimum of 1 ½ hours long to allow sufficient time to analyze your existing swing, familiarize you with the fundamentals of the PPGS, and establish the basics for you to begin to practice the PPGS.

90 to 95% of all swing problems arise out of alignment!

The first lesson will also include a very basic analysis of your clubs to insure they are properly fit to your size, strength, athletic ability, and swing characteristics. Improperly fitting clubs make it virtually impossible to develop a consistent golf swing regardless of the type of swing you are trying to perform. In fact, trying to overcome the disadvantage of poorly fitted clubs, teaches you very bad swing faults.

There are four basic fundamentals in the PPGS:

  • G rip
  • A lignment
  • S tance
  • P osture

GASP establishes the setup which determines the motion.

A good setup is the best preventative medicine for swing faults and does more to promote consistency in your swing than any other single thing.  If your setup is incorrect, there is very little chance that you will hit a solid, straight golf shot! All of the fundamentals must be correct---they are interdependent---the swing does not work without all four being correct.

SURGISM:   90 to 95% of all swing problems arise out of alignment!

The human brain is so powerful that once you set a target in your mind, the brain will make unconscious adjustments to your swing while in motion to correct the errors of your alignment! This is why you wonder many times how you managed to butcher a shot so badly.

The Five Secrets of the

Peak Performance Golf Swing

Secret #1: Golf is a game of angles. The fewer the better.

Secret #2: Palms perpendicular throughout the swing.

Secret #3: You turn only to the toe-line in both the backward up-swing and the forward up-swing.

Secret #4: Swing up to the "T" finish. Pop Tart! AFAP!

Secret #5: Who Cares? Do the next swing right!

Instruction will clearly explain the five secrets and how you can apply them to a new and powerful swing.

Charlie Sampson's Keys to Success with the PPGS

  • Get properly fitted for length and swing weight/MOI before dedicating a lot of time to instruction. Poorly fitting clubs will teach you bad habits.
  • Develop a pre-shot routine following the principals of GASP and use it for every shot you make on the range or on the course.
  • Feet flared, knees wide and remain flexed throughout swing.
  • Smooth, one piece takeaway. Do not lift the club with your wrists.
  • No head movement, neither forward or back, nor up and down.
  • Do not straighten either leg during BUS or FUS. This will cause your head to move.
  • Chin up, not tucked.
  • You must bump down the toe line. Do not initiate the FUS with a hip turn.
  • Get all the way up to the “T” finish for a successful shot.
  • Make a full commitment to the PPGS. If you mix and match movements of a rotational swing with the PPGS, you will only delay your journey to a more successful golf game and frustrate yourself beyond belief.
